THE PHENOMENON OF THREES:
CHAMBER TRIOS FOR FLUTE CLARINET AND PIANO

Lawrence Moss, Dinu Ghezzo, Richard Brooks, Harold Oliver, Ron Mazurek

A dark and stormy night. NYU clarinet professor Esther Lamneck found herself stranded in a blizzard at Rochester airport. She mentioned to fellow would-be passenger-composer Richard Brooks-the tough time she was having finding new pieces to play with her trio. Flights resumed and shortly afterward Brooks wrote "Maelstrom" as a surprise for Lamneck and the ensemble. Thus was born this project: new rep for a familiar but somehow neglected chamber combo of flute, clarinet and piano.

CIGAR SMOKE

Robert Rowe, Lawrence Fritts, Cort Lippe, Dinu Ghezzo, Orlando Legname, Lawrence Moss, Zack Browning

"An outstanding collection of new works for clarinet and electronics, featuring Lamneck's fiery interpretations and dynamic subtleties."
- ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN
This Months Soundtrack March 2009

Esther Lamneck is one of the greatest clarinetists alive. That her name is not a household item is probably the result of her intense dedication to exploring the newest music of the most complex character, rather than the conventional repertoire, and her dedication to teaching new generations of students (at NYU) to play contemporary music.

GENOA SOUND CARDS

Follow these travelers. Two musicians meeting by chance, Claudio Lugo enthusiastic over Esther Lamneck playing the tarogato, the reed instrument that became a symbol of Hungarian independence in the eighteenth century and still exists in Transylvania as the taragot. An instrument whose sounds resembles that of Lugo's curved tenor sax, a nomad instrument. Continue reading

INTENTIONS: AN IMPROVISED CYCLE

Intentions is an improvised cycle of brief pieces creating a narrative journey of evocative sound images and landscapes. Shapes which at first seem unrelated are interwoven in mysterious and arcane ways in a stream of relentless sounds intertwining hidden metallic, harsh, sharp, romantic, ethereal, sacred and profane connections. From the Blkan regions the Tárogató sound travels fluidly in a shrill yellowish fog. Played with a zinc plate, the guitar calls, tumultuously and loudly, "a gathering of spirits" voices. Some dogs bark at the sound of the clarinet, magically attracted by frequencies almost beyong the limits of audibility, voluptuously split and recomposed by the strings in decadent atmospheres and a late Romantic unison.

TÁROGATÓ

Larry Austin, Alfonso Belfiore, Robert Cogan, Esther Lamneck, Ron Mazurek, Dary John Mizelle, Robert Rowe

"Nothing is more fun than discovering a new instrument. The new instrument here is actually hundreds of years old and is called a tárogató. Lamneck has clearly mastered the instrument. She performs every selection with a haunting, fullbodied, rich sound. The engineers did an excellent job. Let's hope she continues to commission and record works for the tárogató." The Newest Music, American Record Guide.

REVIEW FROM FANFARE MAY/JUNE 1999

Esther Lamneck is an extraordinary clarinetist, with exacting control and warm, wonderful tone, from chalumeau to the highest register. She negotiates large skips, microtones, and multiphonics with the same casual ease, so that none of the difficulties (and there are many) of this music ever seem to affect the expressive intent of her playing. The recorded sound captures all of this well, with the exception of a too-distant piano part in the Kraft work.

REVIEW FROM IMPROJAZZ
(French Experimental Jazz Magazine)

"Not from the Usual Suspects"

Why this record in Improjazz? By the looks of it, it's not improvised, nor jazz. But we are against genre boundaries, plus things are (fortunately) more complicated than they seem. Esther Lamneck is a master clarinetist, who could have carved a nice easy career performing Mozart and Bartok (and she did for a while with great success). Continue reading the full review
